Northern Tool + Equipment
Northern Tool + Equipment Company Description
Like most great companies, Northern Tool + Equipment had humble beginnings, started in a garage. Northern Hydraulics was established in 1980 by a resourceful Minnesota-native and Ranger, Donald L. Kotula. As a child, Donald grew up working alongside his father in a scrap yard dealing with recycled industrial debris, old train parts, and mining equipment. In his teens, and with an entrepreneurial spirit, he started a business refurbishing and selling used components to loggers. Paired with his education from the University of Minnesota, and former sales experience at Ziegler selling bulldozers and loaders, Donald moved forward and in the 1980’s, joined the family business and began handling operations for Northern Hydraulics. The business grew, and the first store, which was a rented warehouse and showroom space in Burnsville, Minnesota, opened in 1981.
New products added over time. These included: tools, tarps, water pumps, snowplow parts, and air compressors. In 1991, the company started a manufacturing business that built bigger and tougher products under the NorthStar brand, which included log splitters, generators, and pressure washers. To better explain the business's product offering, Northern Tool + Equipment became the new name in 1998.
